Looking to plan a trip to the keys, but feeling overwhelmed by all the options? Well if you’re a fan of boating, seafood and laid-back days then Marathon, Florida just might be the right place for you! We decided to spend a long weekend in Marathon and it was definitely a little slice of paradise. From the Caribbean looking water to the seafood, I now understand why everyone raves about the keys.

We’ve been staying at my parents in Longboat Key, Florida for the last couple of months, so the drive from LBK to Marathon was around 6.5 hours. Not an awful drive, especially when you break it up with a stop in Ft. Lauderdale. If you’re planning a trip to Marathon, I would highly suggest flying into Miami and then driving the remainder of the way to the keys. Marathon does have an airport but it’s super small and can be extremely pricey to fly into.

WHERE DID WE STAY

We rented an adorable Airbnb that was right on the canal, the beds left little to be desired but the view was breathtaking. The home had a huge kitchen which was perfect for making meals at our place. The location was within walking distance to a few restaurants and right by a marina. Our favorite feature of the house was the back porch overlooking the water. You can view the Airbnb here!

WHERE DID WE EAT

We ate at a few places while in Marathon and there were two that I’d consider a must eat at.

Keys Fisheries - Keys Fisheries is a casual restaurant with a whole lot of bang. From their delicious food to ocean views, this place feels like a little hidden gem. I ordered the fried lobster special and it was AMAZING! Grabbing a slice of their key lime pie is a must, and if you’re anything like us purchasing an entire pie just felt right.

Sparky’s Landing - Sparky’s was one of the first places we ate at and ended up going back to twice. Their daily happy hour $0.30 peel and eat shrimp was too amazing to pass up. Aaron ordered the pizza our first night and the spaghetti the second night, both were delicious as well.

WHAT DID WE DO

Honestly, we kind of did a whole lot of nothing and it was amazing! When we did venture out it was to the Bahia Honda state park, on a boat or taking a dip in the pool. In general, Marathon feels less like a party city on the Keys and more like a relaxing escape.

Overall Marathon was such a nice place to visit and we can’t wait to explore the Keys more this year. Have you been to the keys before? If so, where should we go next?
