Is Your Wine Toxic?

If you’re anything like me then you remember the first time you had a really great glass of wine. You know the one, the type of wine that can turn any wine hater into a lover. For me, this happened on a trip to Italy with my family. My parents had always loved wine but until this trip their love for wine had not made its way to me.

One sip of that Italian cabernet and I was sold.

Over the last eight years I’ve continued to love wine without a single thought about what’s inside of it. It’s pretty wild if we think about the fact that there are no ingredients listed on the majority of bottles. We are so picky about the type of lotion we put on our face or what our dog eats - but wine? It must be all safe!

Wine—one of the most popular drinks in the US—is still consumed without a thought about its ingredients.

At the beginning of 2021 my overall body was not feeling like it used to. Add one glass of wine into the mix and I was bloated for days, my face retained as much water as the Pacific and the morning greeted me with a nice small headache. After a little digging I soon discovered that commercially made wines are often created from industrial farmed grapes laced with chemicals that are manipulated with artificial additives and technological tricks.

As if that didn’t freak me out enough, in the US, the FDA approves of 76 additives for wine. These include artificial dyes, genetically modified yeast, and various animal byproducts like isinglass (dried fish bladders that are used as a filtering agent), and casein. (Not to mention, adding sugar to wine is widespread in the commercial industry.) For people who drink wine regularly, these chemicals can build up in the body, potentially causing harm. Some researchers in the field have begun measuring the amounts of glyphosate in wine. Other experts link the common wine hangover to all the junk allowed in the juice.

To take it a step further - currently, the only ingredient mandated to appear on a wine label in the US is added sulfites. This means all the extras—the thickeners, the dyes, the flavor manipulators—get swallowed without any thought.

Enter Dry Farm Wines.

Dry Farm Wines is the world’s premier natural, lab tested wine club. At Dry Farm Wines, they curate the highest quality Natural Wines from small family farms grown with organic and/or biodynamic practices. Unlike commercialized and processed wines, these are real wines.

Dry Farm Wines is not only committed to providing customers with pure wine but educating consumers on why it’s important for us to know what’s inside of our wine.

For example, have you heard of or seen Mega Purple listed on a wine bottle before? Mega Purple, a commercial coloring agent concentrate that is produced and sold by Constellation (the 3rd largest wine producer in the world), is a commonly used additive in winemaking that enhances the fruit flavor of a wine and adds a deeper color. It's estimated that 10,000 gallons are sold every year, and added to about 25 million bottles of wine. It's used in a majority of low and moderately priced wines, but can also be used to touch up expensive premium wines. Almost every red wine under $15 has "Mega Purple" in it.
